One of the biggest challenges facing physical therapy practices today isn’t clinical care — it’s documentation.
Therapists are spending hours after work finishing notes, sacrificing personal time and increasing the risk of burnout. For many clinicians, the workday doesn’t end when the last patient leaves. It continues at home, late into the evening, completing documentation.
At USPh, we recognized this challenge and decided to take action.
Last year, we launched a pilot program focused on AI-assisted documentation. The goal was simple: reduce documentation time, improve therapist satisfaction, and allow clinicians to focus more fully on patient care.
The pilot included users across a variety of partnerships, EMR systems, clinic sizes, and practice settings. We intentionally tested technology across diverse environments to understand its real-world impact.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
Clinicians immediately reported a noticeable decrease in documentation time. More importantly, many were able to complete all their notes before leaving the clinic for the day.
That matters.
Work-life balance remains one of the strongest predictors of clinician retention. When therapists can leave work on time and disconnect at the end of the day, they are more engaged, more satisfied, and more likely to stay long-term.
But the benefits went beyond efficiency.
One of the most meaningful outcomes clinicians shared was improved patient engagement. Instead of focusing on typing notes or staring at a computer screen during visits, therapists were able to be more present with their patients.
- They could maintain eye contact.
- They could listen more actively.
- They could have more natural conversations.
Technology captured the interaction and helped generate documentation afterward, allowing clinicians to prioritize the human connection during treatment sessions.
For our partners, this represents more than just operational improvement. It’s an investment in retention, culture, and patient experience.
U.S. Physical Therapy has seen the physical therapy industry evolve over the years. Our goal is to help our partners embrace solutions that support clinicians’ well-being and operational efficiency. When therapists can focus more on patients and less on paperwork, everyone wins.
